What is type 2 hair

Type 2 hair is typically the loosest curl pattern on the hair type chart. It falls in the category that lies between straight and curly but still remains neither of each. The type two hair is sub-categorized into 3 types being type 2A, 2B and 2C hair. These sub-categories have their similarities, as well as unique differences that make them stand out.

2A- Soft waves

Type 2A is the least curly hair type on the chart. It has a fine, soft texture, it is easy to manage and appears to be less frizzy as compared to other hair types. It carries a loose texture that makes it difficult for one to spot its wave. One way to describe type 2A hair is that it looks like a stretched out “S” pattern, and the waves become visible when the hair reaches a certain length.

2A hair stands out uniquely for holding a stronger resilience than other curl types, this resilience helps it stay together regardless of harsh conditions that would naturally deter a beautiful crown.

2B- wavy hair

This hair type is undoubtedly a lot more defined than the 2A type and has curves that are not as loose as 2A but not as tight as 2C either. It has a slightly more visible bend than type 2A, giving it more defined waves and a curl pattern that stands out differently too.

For this hair type, deep conditioning should be a regular routine. Due to this, you’ll most likely need a product that defines your hair and keeps it moisturized.

2C- Deep waves

2C has thicker and more defined curls compared to 2A and 2B. It is more voluminous with a coarse texture. The 2C curl type mostly likely has its waves ranging from loose to tight; these puts them at an edge of quick frizz

For this hair type, you’re definitely not throwing away the deep conditioning routine! With 2C, conditioning becomes a must as regular conditioning helps to keep your hair extra moisturized and less frizzy.

Hair care routine for type 2 hair

The type 2 hair is delicate and different and as such, it requires a well formulated hair care routine.

In this section of the article, we’ll be looking at the best hair care routine for type 2 hair, ranging from a normal wash routine, to a styling routine, and a night time pre-sleep routine. Let’s get into it!

Wash routine for type 2 hair

There are a few things you’ll need before commencing with this routine. Here they are;

  • Sulfate free shampoo
  • Regular cleansing conditioner
  •  Moisturizing leave-in conditioner
  • A wide toothed comb
  • An old cotton t-shirt

1. Shampooing

Shampooing is key for a healthy type 2 hair, and it’s my pleasure to walk you through the steps.

Start by getting your hair wet with a little bit of warm water then divide your hair into sections of 4. For effectiveness, it is advisable to gently apply your shampoo into your scalp then massage your with your fingertips. Be gentle with your scalp as you wouldn’t want your curls or waves to become frizzy.  After massaging, rinse off thoroughly with clean water.

2. Conditioning

Right after shampooing your hair, gently squeeze out the excessive water and apply a good quantity of conditioner to your hair. With the use of a wide toothed comb, gently comb the conditioner through your hair from your scalp to the lengths and ends of your hair.  Give your hair a good massage and afterwards, rinse off the conditioner thoroughly. Use a microfiber towel to gently remove any excess moisture.

3. Detangling

This may be the tricky part as a lot of people easily get confused on how to detangle their type 2 hair.  Detangling your type 2 hair may need a little extra effort but it’s not enough to get worried because in the end it’s totally worth it.

To detangle your hair, simply follow the easy steps below.

  • Make sure your hair is wet, afterwards apply a deep conditioner.
  • Part your hair into smaller sections to make the detangling process easier.
  • From the bottom of your hair, start detangling, while carefully working your way upward towards the scalp.

Use a wide toothed comb or a detangling brush to comb through, rinse thoroughly, then dry.  See the next paragraph for drying tips!

4. Drying

Drying your type 2 hair should be done as soon as you’ve finished washing.  One of the best ways to dry or remove excess moisture from type 2 hair is the plopping method. Hair plopping requires using any equipment void of heat to remove excess moisture from the hair. One of the ways to do this is by using a cotton t-shirt or any cotton material to prevent breakage. Gently place this cloth or piece around your head dabbing the hair gently allowing your shirt to soak up excessive moisture from the hair. You can also use the cloth to scrunch up your hair for a more defined look.

Styling routine

For type 2 hair, your styling routine has a unique process. Below is the recommended processes to try out for styling your hair.

1. Dampen the hair

This simply entails adding moisture to hair without fully soaking it in water. You can achieve this by getting water in a spray bottle and applying it on your hair. If you don’t have a spray bottle at reach, you can gently wet your hand and work it through your hair.  Dampening is important as it helps the hair to better absorb the products you will be using to style your hair.

2. Apply curl cream

You’ll need curl cream to activate your waves and get your pattern defined. Your curl cream needs to contain important moisturizing ingredients like Aloe Vera, shea-butter, coconut oil, or anyone that floats your boat.  Rub the cream between your palms and apply evenly on your hair. Use a wide toothed brush to spread it on every part of your hair, giving your curls a crispy defined look!

3. Apply gel mousse

Applying gel or mousse helps to give hair a firm look and add definition to the curls.  This is the next thing you will want to use after your curl cream, using the same technique as previously stated. Run product in-between your palms and apply evenly onto hair.  You can use the raking motion, or just simply smooth it through your strands.

4. Diffuse

Diffusing after applying gel enables even distribution of heat to waves helping the products you applied set in place and maintaining your crisp, defined curls.

To use this method, start by diffusing in an upward motion to dry your strands and ends while adding a bit of definition to them.  Next, tilt your head upside down to dry your roots without adding extra heat or damage to the ends of your hair.  When your hair is fully dried, turn off the dryer and tilt your head back up.

5. Apply oil

Applying oil when your hair is fully dry is a great way to enhance the look by adding shine while also sealing in moisture within the strands.

Rub the oil between your palms and apply evenly to your hair. Comb the hair with your comb or brush to  add volume and achieve a beautiful look.

Night time routine

Maintaining a healthy pre-sleep routine is key for maintaining a healthy type 2 hair.  Below are a few helpful tips to help you care for your hair effectively at night.

1. Put hair in a loose bun

Getting your hair off from its tight bun at night is the way to go. You probably have had a long day with your bun sitting high and pretty.  At night you’ll want to let it loose. This helps to keep your style intact, gives your follicle a great relief, and is much better for your hair’s health overall.

2. Wear a silk/ satin bonnet

You wouldn’t want to wake up to messy curls by the morrow! If this is true then, you most likely need a silk or satin bonnet.  Silk bonnets help to prevent frizz, hold off breakage, and maintain the health of your hair while sleeping.  They also help in moisture retention, reducing risk of hair damage, and enhancing the overall beauty of your type 2 hair.

In conclusion;

Your type 2 hair is unique and beautiful with definite curls and waves that requires all the care you can give.  Remember the tips we have discussed; always keep your hair moisturized, make your conditioner your friend ( both the rinse-out conditioner, and your daily leave-in conditioner). Avoid shampoos that contain sulfate and other harsh chemicals, take out time to detangle your hair, and avoid the application of heat on your curls.
