I’m sure by now that you’ve all seen the trend of curly girls wearing satin bonnets. Whether it’s a TikTok video or someone passing on the streets on the weekends. Or even an influencer doing her skin care routine on YouTube.

For a long time, seeing people in satin bonnets confused me. I thought  it was just a new and emerging style trend, but lately, I began to see the importance of these bonnets after I asked myself the big question.

What are satin bonnets?

Satin bonnets are puffy head coverings usually made of satin or silk fabrics and are worn while sleeping to protect the hair. Although they can be worn by anyone with any hair type, they are mostly seen on people with curly hair types within the range of 3b to 4c. Satin bonnets come in different styles, sizes and colors, and they usually have elasticized or adjustable ends that help to secure them in place during sleep.

What are the benefits of satin bonnets?

1. Keeps hair clean

So many factors contribute to making your hair dirty. That could range from natural oils, to sweat, product buildup, dead skin cells and even environmental factors like wind and dust. Obviously, the use of hair bonnets can’t control natural causes like sweat and dead skin cells.

The good thing though, is that they can help curb the pollution from the environment.

During the day, your hair traps dust, smoke and other stuff in the air. Same goes with during the night. The use of hair bonnets will help prevent all these pollutants from touching your hair, thereby reducing the way your hair gets dirty. This also protects the hair from damage by smoke and other harmful pollutants in the air.

Using a hair bonnet can also help you keep your hands out of your hair, preventing the transfer of dirt, oils and germs from your hands to your hair. The dirt on your hands accumulate from partaking in some basic daily activities that require the use of your hands.

2. Improves skin appearance

This may actually come as a shocker and cause many people to ask questions like: “How does wearing something on your hair help improve your skin?” Well, the answer is quite simple. Everyday we apply products like conditioners, oils and serums to our hair in the process of performing a “hair care routine”. Now, what we don’t realize is that those products build up overtime, and mix with the sweat and dirt on our hair.

Although this is quite normal, what most people don’t see is that these oils rub off on our pillows when we sleep, and they transfer from our pillows to the face, causing skin problems like acne breakouts. Using satin bonnets when sleeping will ensure that the oils in the hair stay in the hair, thereby preventing acne breakouts and other skin problems.

3. Keeps hair hydrated

Cotton pillowcases and bed linen provide comfort during sleep. On the contrary, they can be very detrimental to hair health. Cotton is known to have very high absorbing power, which also applies to its behavior in contact with hair.

Sleeping in a cotton pillowcase can absorb the moisture from your hair, leaving your hair dry and frizzy in the morning. Wearing a satin bonnet can help prevent the moisture in your hair from being absorbed by the pillowcase. This will greatly contribute to your moisture retention efforts in the long term.

4. Helps to prevent tangles

Satin is a smooth fabric which enables the hair to glide smoothly across its surface. This helps to prevent friction between the strands and the cotton pillowcases. It minimizes the chances of them rubbing against each other and leading to tangles.

The use of satin bonnets also helps prevent dryness, which is a very big factor that influences breakage and tangling. Dry hair lacks the necessary moisture and oils that keep it supple, flexible and reduce friction, making the strands rough and more likely to tangle with each other.

5. They protect your hairstyles

When you get braids, twists, and cornrows, or whether you just simply put your hair in a nice updo, the hairstyles have a great potential of getting rough and frizzy from rubbing against surfaces. This very factor could cause your hairstyles to look rough and old.If it’s a delicate hairstyle, it could even unravel as well.

Satin bonnets help to protect hairstyles by keeping them in place and providing a barrier between the hair and external factors. They help to preserve the style and its shape, thereby enhancing the longevity of the hair.

Satin bonnets could also come in handy when you get a silk press, as they  help to keep your hair clean so you don’t have to wash it. They also protect your hair from humidity that could possibly ruin your style.

6. Makes hair products more effective

Many people do not know this, but YES! A satin bonnet can make your hair products work better. Satin bonnets provide a conducive environment for hair products to work effectively. It provides heat which allows for better absorption, they create a space for reduced product transfer, as well as extended product longevity.

The bonnets prevent the hair products from getting evaporated, or transferred from one surface to another. I.e; from your hair to your pillow. And since the fabric is less absorbing as compared to cotton, it lets the products sit on the hair. This gives it more time to be absorbed into the strands. The use of satin bonnets also extends the longevity of hairstyles. Indirectly enhancing the effectiveness of the products used to achieve the style.

7. They help to reduce breakage

Satin bonnets prevent your hair from rubbing against other surfaces while you sleep. Surfaces such as cotton pillowcases, blankets, duvets, and other bed linen. Cotton pillowcases have a rough surface which can create friction against the hair strands as you toss and turn in your sleep. This tossing and turning can lead to breakage on your delicate strands. Satin bonnets, unlike cotton pillowcases, are smooth fabrics with minimal friction, which will not cause breakage when your hair rubs off on it.

Why are satin bonnets preferred over cotton?

Yes, there are cotton bonnets too!! Bonnets can pretty much be made out of any type of fabric. However, not all fabrics provide the benefits that satin bonnets do. Satin bonnets are preferred over cotton for various reasons. Firstly, satin is a soft fabric with lower friction surfaces which will be effective in reducing friction and breakage. Secondly, satin is more gentle on the strands because it isn’t made of the same rough fibers as cotton. Thirdly, they provide a softer and more protective barrier against dirt and friction.

Conclusion

Incorporating the use of satin bonnets into your hair care routine can increase your chances of having long, healthy, and bouncy locs of hair. Satin bonnets are good investments as they provide all of the benefits listed above.

Be sure to always remember the benefits discussed in this article, and strive to always put on your satin bonnets before bed. If you’re someone who finds it hard to cover your hair at night or bonnets are just not your thing, some other alternatives for you could be satin scarfs, silk pillowcases and silk head wraps.
